Two years ago I was honoured to return as MP for our community.
In those two years, we have made tremendous progress in improving the lives of Canadians.
The new Canada Child Benefit (CCB) eliminated benefits for the most wealthy and increased benefits
for everyone else. Not only did it lift 300,000 children out of poverty; for the average family in Ajax, it
means $6,270 a year – tax free. In fact, in Ajax alone nearly $100 million in payments will go directly
to families that need it. Further focusing on the middle class, we lowered taxes for 9 million Canadians
and for small businesses by asking those making the most to pay a bit more. On average, this means
a savings of $540 a year for the average family. We have also kept our promise to return the age of
eligibility for Old Age Security back to 65; reversing the changes made by the last government. Moreover,
we have increased the Guaranteed Income Supplement for single seniors thus stabilizing the
financial security of almost 900,000 single seniors, while at the same time strengthening the Canada
Pension Plan for all Canadians.
Also in Ajax, I am proud of our initiative to expand the protection of the Rouge National Park; incorporating
one-third of the airport lands in northern Pickering. This park is a first of its kind and with our
investments in clean water and waste water treatment, public transit in Durham and the GTA, we are
working hard to get Canadians moving and keeping the environment around them healthy.
The net result is an economy that is working. After a decade of anemic economic growth, averaging
only 1% a year, we are now leading the G7. Growth in the GDP this year is on track to be greater
than 3.5%; our best year in more than 10. Not only are we leading the G7 nations in economic
growth, but we are in job creation as well. Since we came to office, the economy has generated
more than 500,000 new jobs. More than 60% of these are full time.
I am proud of what we have been able to achieve together but there is still so much more left to do.
Our economy is greatly improved but it has to work for everyone. We are committed to building on
the success to date to ensure your life and those of our neighbours here in Ajax and across Canada
